John and Heather met at work.
As coworkers they didn’t get along well. hee hee
Heather thought John was an arrogant know-it-all and John used to hum the Wicked Witch song from The Wizard of Oz when he saw her coming. It wasn’t until a few years later when John asked Heather to lunch (and she FINALLY said yes), that things started to change. One lunch and they have been together ever since.
“November 12th was a normal Saturday afternoon. We had lunch and ran some errands in the afternoon. As evening approached John asked if I wanted to go to the Fair Oaks Bridge. This is where John took me on our first date, and was also the place of our first kiss.
By the time we got there it was pretty dark as the sun had set around 5:00 pm. It was also quite cold. We stood on the bridge looking at the moon on the river and John started to complain that his hands were cold. He wouldn’t let up how cold his hands were and asked to put his hands in my coat pockets. Admittedly put off by this I removed my hands from my pockets allowing him to warm his hands in my coat not understanding why he couldn’t use his own coat. He offered for me to use his coat numerous times but stubborn as I am, I suffered through. After several minutes of him prodding to put my hands in his coat pockets he gave up. He removed his hands from my coat, put his hand in his pocket and pulled out a box in one hand and a flashlight in another. Lighting the box to show the ring, he asked me to marry him. I burst into tears and said YES! Had I known he wanted me to put my hands in his pocket for this reason I wouldn’t have been quite so stubborn!
So here we are on the bridge, both shaking from the cold and the excitement of the moment. We were scared to take the ring out of the box out of fear it would leap off the side of the bridge. As we stood on the bridge we failed to hear the police helicopter flying overhead, spotlight in tow. The parks close at dusk so they were checking for “trespassers.” The helicopter hovered right over the opposite end of the bridge as we were standing; shining it’s light on the walkway of the bridge. It quickly made its way down the length of the bridge, heading straight towards us, spotlight still shining. We put the ring away and ran off the bridge trying to stay out of the approaching spotlight; laughing the entire time as we “ran” from the police. When off the bridge John took the ring out and put it on my finger.” – Heather
